Wet Nursing
Wet nursing - What is it and what's it's place in today's society?
Wet nursing is the act of breastfeeding another woman's child.
In today's society, when people hear of this, they freak out and are, of all things, disgusted! I'm not entirely sure why, though it probably has something to do with the fact that we sexualize the breast and the act of breastfeeding along with it. (Hint : There is NOTHING sexual about breastfeeding. In any way, shape, or form.)
But honestly, this shouldn't even be an issue. "Back in the day" wet nursing was something that saved many baby's lives! When a mothers milk didn't come in or she had issues or died in child birth, they didn't have a "handy" general store to go pick up a can of formula to feed that babe.
Obviously we have moved past that dire need, but wet nursing can (and does!) still come in handy!
Breast never stopped being best and it's always best straight from the tap. Not only can orphans & preemies benefit, but lending a hand to a new or struggling mama so her nipples can rest is always helpful.
Also, having a babysitter who is willing and able to nurse your baby/toddler while you are away gives invaluable comfort to many mothers!
Imagine being in your PP healing stage and your friend can fully care for your infant while you get some much needed rest! We all know how exhausting and taxing those first few weeks and months are!
Imagine feeling free to go on a date with the hubby because your sister can nurse your babe alongside her own while you're out. If you're a FTM you'll probably still worry, but I know for me, personally, it was comforting to know if my babe got upset, my sister had boobs and was willing to comfort her the way she was used to.
Imagine having a small, tight knit group of women who are all nursing and able to meet one anothers children's needs? Imagine the bond between those women and all of their children! During tandem nursing, children tend to giggle and play and bond, it's amazing really. ♡
Recently I had my first tandem/wet nursing experience. I've offered boob to my neice a few times before, but she was always hesitant. Well I was babysitting her the other day and she got upset which got my girl upset and when my tot knocked me down for some boob, her cousin decided to join in. My little girl wasn't sure how to feel about it, so she went back and forth between gently trying to steal the boob out of her mouth, and giggling like a crazy baby because her friend was drinking milkies too. 💗 Oh how my heart swelled with love and joy! 💓
Another benefit to bring up, is that it teaches the act of sharing! When AJ got a little jealous and tried to take the boob away from her cousin, I softly told her, "Sharing with your friend is nice, isn't it? How lovely it is that we can share and help make her feel all better!" Already, early on, I've had a chance to teach her about generosity, kindness, and compassion, and in such a lovely way. 💖
Overall, wet nursing is a pretty amazing thing! So let's spread awareness and squash the uncalled for hate! #WetNursingIsTheShit
